The traditional world religions focus on the private life of the individual and aim to regulate it with rituals and formal prayers. They prescribe ceremonies and observances which are required to be carried out on specified times and days and on special occasions during the year. These religions have their own set of dogmas and require their followers to accept them without question. They endeavor to cultivate, through their dogmas and the prescribed rituals, a moral sense in their followers and expect that this would enable the individual to conduct himself correctly in all his personal matters as well as his communal life. They leave the individual free to chart his own course and devise his own modus operandi the collective lite of the community and its politico-economic affairs.
As a system of life, Islam is an all-pervasive and multifaceted mechanism which is involved in matters relating to the individual and the society and to the state and its institutions. It provides policy framework, guidelines, instructions, sanctions and authorization on all activities, individual or collective, in a country or a social group. At the state level it is concerned with matters such as the ideological basis of the state, the organization of the state's machinery, political and fiscal structure, public and personal laws, statutory regulations, rules, procedures, policy directives, etc. For the political system of the state it enumerates the guidelines on issues such as sovereignty of the state.
