Abstract

This study explores the sources and methodology of al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī in explaining gharīb al-ḥadīth within Hudā al-Sārī, the introduction he authored to Fatḥ al-Bārī four years earlier (813 AH). The research is divided into five chapters: a brief biography of Ibn Ḥajar, an introduction to the book, an outline of gharīb al-ḥadīth and its significance, his methodological approach, and the sources he relied upon.

The significance of this study lies in highlighting the scholarly value of Hudā al-Sārī, which contains numerous precise insights in the service of Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī. Most notably, Ibn Ḥajar explained more than six thousand rare terms, clarifying both their linguistic and juristic meanings, His extensive travels and numerous teachers enriched his scholarship and shaped the accuracy of his analysis. The research demonstrates how Ibn Ḥajar’s contribution in Hudā al-Sārī added a vital dimension to hadith and linguistic studies, making it a work that was highly esteemed and widely received by scholars.
